Architect: ‘We jumped the gun’ with harbour plans

AN architect has apologised for ‘jumping the gun’ and causing confusion by publishing images of glass-fronted buildings beside St Helier harbour.

The apology from Mike Waddington has been issued after graphics appeared on his company’s website that showed large buildings on areas of the harbour.

Earlier this month Harbours commercial manager Myra Shacklady met boat owners to discuss proposed changes to marinas. Some boat owners accused Jersey Harbours of having secret redevelopment plans when the images were circulated.

But Mr Waddington said that the drawings were not commissioned by Jersey Harbours and they were produced as part of some earlier conceptual work done by the practice.

He said: ‘We did some lay-outs and we got a little carried away. We jumped the gun and stuck some of the drawings up on our website. However, when we realised that they had been copied and were being circulated we whipped them off the website.’

Well at least we know what the probable plans are, for the eventual fate of the area. How horrible!

But, it does look great! Conceptual stuff is produced by designers and architects all the time, often without any plans to show tthe wider public just to demonstrate their creative ideas to prospective customers.

I don’t see why he bothered to apologise, or remove the images. So long as he wasn’t saying that the drawings were anything other than his concepts, what’s the problem?

Who hasn’t sketched their own idea on the back of a napkin at some point? If they were of that standard wouldn’re you show them off?

I’m sure every architect working in Jersey has similar drawings knocking about; god knows they’d go mad knocking out only drawings of the kind if bland rubbishtha planning dept. would approve.

It is known that Mr Waddington has a successful firm of architechs. The drawings are subjective however they are well drawn and very powerful in feature as one would expect from such a mature well known firm.

There is something not right here, why produce expensive ( if you are not being paid )drawings that are just to be filed, for may or maybe not another day. Ah yes WEB is charge of Jerseys waterfront development. I rest my case.
