Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur
BUSINESSES should allow staff to work past retirement age to reduce the Island’s reliance on immigrant labour, says Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur.
And the Senator said that he would look into removing barriers that currently prevent public sector employees working past the age of 65.
He made the comments in response to UK government proposals that could end compulsory retirement at 65.
The UK government said this week that it was also looking at the introduction of measures that would allow older people to have the right to request flexible hours from an employer.
The Chief Minister said that positive steps would be taken to encourage employers to hire older people to try to reduce the Island’s reliance on immigration.

Let us work past 65 – come on we won’t have a choice, we’ll be dropping dead on the office floor and the cleaners will leave us by the bins.
I am in my forties and fully expect to work well into my 70’s, unless I die first.
Those fortunate people who have retired at 65 or younger are the last that will do so, despite paying into the system all of our lives I doubt we’ll get anything out of it come our hour of need.
Of course you could introduce genuine means testing for benefits to prevent abuse and ensure the available money was spent where needed – nah that wouldn’t be fair would it.

Why should we work past 65? Many who started work straight after school have already paid in for over 45 years yet cannot get a farthing in pension until 65 unless we accept a substantiall reduction at 63! 45 years is enough for anyone and if you left school at 16 you will have paid in for 45 years by 61. You get no greater pension for paying in for another 4 years.
