AIRPORT director Julian Green has resigned.
After four years in charge of the Airport, he will step down in October. No reason has been given for his departure.
Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean announced the resignation yesterday afternoon, adding that he wanted to see a joint body overseeing both the Airport and Jersey Harbours in the future.
And he said that a shadow board looking at the roles of the Airport and Harbours would be set up, with a view to establishing a more integrated system.
Mr Green featured in the list of public sector earners over £100,000, published last month. His salary was put between £122,000 and £127,000 and his total package including pension is worth between £130,000 and £150,000.

Good news, glad to hear he is going. Now lets get the departures hall back to a more attractive and friendly place. Move the security search back to where it was and if necessary relocate the world duty free shops. There must be a solution to making the hall more aesthetically pleasing whilst still being able to generate revenue and maintain security.

Another feather in his cap for Alan Maclean. Action rather than press releases, an X in the box next election.

I,m surprised Mr Green has lasted this long before wanting to jump ship ( or should that be plane)
Please young Mr Mc Lean Dont spend any more of our money investigating how the airport and harbours should be run , there is only one proper way in this brave new commercial world that our Council of Ministers wish to take us into ,sell them off to companies who know how to run a commercial operation and just be the landlord simples !

After arriving with so much promise,I trust there will be a full exit interview so we can learn whether it is Jersey that he is unhappy with, the airport as it has developed (some under his guidance of course) or whatever else is making him depart after such a short space of time.
Perhaps this is one of the 1st roles that does not need 1 on 1 replacement but that might be too scary and big a decision for our ministers.

What a shame Mr Green is leaving, from what i have seen of him on TV and listened to him on the radio has certainly brought the Airport in to the 21st Century, with the new departures area ,but now no doubt he has his hands tied with cash restraints and would imagine he is totally fed up with political interference , the airport should be made a private trading company, so politicians have no say what goes on there, but this will never happen , because it gives them something to moan about

Chris (1).
What planet are you on? The departure hall nowadays is a far more user friendly place. You hardly ever wait more than 10 minutes for security (as opposed to 90 minutes on some Summer Saturdays a few years ago). Sure the public may not be able to make use of all the shops in the hall… but name an airport where you can?
The duty free shop and restaurant have just received a much needed makeover… the place is HUGE, and most of it never made any money before. Now it has the potential to… hell, your 30 quid Easyjet flight may even get a bit cheaper because of it.
Mr Sensible (6).
Sensible indeed! Agree with every word you say. Mr Green has been a huge asset to Jersey airport compared to Mike Lanyon, whom he replaced. The changes there have been huge, and pretty much all for the better. Sure not everything’s worked out (bmi to Heathrow for example), but you could have Richard Branson running the place and I doubt things would have turned out different.
I’m surprised at the lack of comments re Mr Green’s salary. “Ah ma luv, how ruddy dare someone be paid thet amount of money. He should get a sack of spuds and be happy with thet!!”
We need a decent replacement if we want our airport to even maintain the level of service it has, let alone expand.

Assuming Mr Green really leaves this time – remember he quit once before – lets look at his legacy:
Starbucks!
The beautiful security fence
Picturesque bollards
Easyjet flights to Luton
BMI flights to Heathrow
That control tower
Loss of access to the Viewing Gallery for non-flyers
Ruining the departure hall
Good on yer Julian!

Didn’t he resign not so long ago and then changed his mind. Now he’s done it again. One never knows the real truth nowadays

John @8
You have not mentioned all the new managers employed, nor the fact that the Civil Aviation Authority gives out dispensation to small airports like Jersey obviously because they are small and they don’t have be equipped like Heathrow Airport.
The management in Jersey are quick to quote the CAA when it comes to new expensive work being done as unavoidable rather than using the phrase desirable.
The security fence is a complete and expensive example of incompetent spending of tax payers money ( from memory I seem to remember £200,000 ) being wasted. A pair of decent bolt croppers to hand, any where on the opposite ( St Ouens ) side from the main road, will get you and a Toyota flat bed pickup, or tank if you wish, into the airport grounds.
To do what exactly? shoot the holiday makers, or locals ? Try St. Helier on a Saturday afternoon. For goodness sake get real.
Pay to park to pick up your loved ones or friends when you stop for five or ten minutes get a life. This is not in the public interest it is extortion.
So John@8 I am afraid you are clearly conflicted and biased and today’s poodle and Anthony Jay @9 you win by stating good and true facts, understood by the islanders and are head of the pack and a probably an informed airport worker. Except for one small point, Starbucks coffee is actually quite good !

Agreed! He has implemented a lot in his short time and has been an asset to the island. It can’t be easy working with his hands tied behind his back and we have been fortunate to have him.

good riddance I say,
my Girfriend used to work at Aurigny Desk, departures hall in darkness because of keeping lights off and airconditioning turned off everywhere, she froze or got too hot like the passengers did,
stuffing a starbucks cafe where their desk was and not allowing access to water, kettles or toasters for staff, introducing daft passenger screens where the staff could not operate them with out neck problems , he wont be missed…….

8. John. The reason you don;t have to queue for hours any longer at security are as follows:
1. Landing fees are so high no-one can afford to come to Jersey therefore they don’t leave.
2. No airlines fly to Jersey any more (see 1)
3. Those that do fly have reduced the number of flights to a handful a day.
I remember once being quoted that Jersey was once the busiest airport for its size. The departure and arrival halls both have the character and soul of a morgue.

Agree with you.
Saturdays was the busiest period of the week at one time, with plane after plane landing one after the other non stop,go now and its like a ghost town.

In common with almost all mainland airports Jersey has now become very unfriendly with a lot of the staff turned into automaton robots lacking in any form of common sense. It’s symptomatic of a paranoia that EVERYONE is a potential terrorist. Not that many years ago Jersey airport was friendly and welcoming and on a summer Saturday it was indeed very busy with constant charters to almost all UK airports and a fair few to Germany and Scandinavia,

@9 & @11. Gotta love it when people make sweeping comments on things they obviously have no knowledge of!!!
Lets address a couple shall we?
CAA do not give dispensation to “small airports”, they give it to ALL airports, as long as the known contraventions are shown to be getting addressed! THERE IS NO DISPENSATION WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY!!!
How is it the airport directors fault if an airline decides to remove a route from an airport? He cant make an airline continue a route! Quite often airlines may simply start a route with no intention of keeping it going simply to ensure they maintain that airport slot, at for example heathrow/Luton!
You are quite right there are no Starbucks at any other airport in the world!!!
The “security fence” is a requirement of the DFT (Department for Transport), if Jersey wants to continue having any european airlines flying here then it has to abide with the security regulations imposed by our security governing body. But yeah, obviously the airport wanted to waste £200,000 for fun!
NO other airport charges for arriving departing passengers to park does it!!! Where do you think the monies from the car park goes, straight into Julians account??? No it goes straight into the States coffers to try and keep Jersey Landing fees down. Landng fee’s that have not increased in a number of years.
@14 What exactly are the landing fee charges, you seem to be so well informed, how much does it cost for a DH8D or a B737 to land with, lets say 50 pax on board, how about private aircraft, how long can visiting aircraft park for free at Jersey airport and most importantly how do the fee’s compare to other similar sized airfields.. No, didn’t think you knew!
There are more airlines flying to Jersey now than ever before! They may not be the airlines or routes the majority of the general public wants, but Jersey Airport is not going to turn any airline/route away now days, they actively encourage/seeking them out.
And Jersey Airport was ONCE(eighties) the second busiest airport in the UK, Gatwick was number 1, but that was before tourism took a rather dramatic downturn in Jersey, that has been continuing ever since the late nineties… But i guess thats Julians fault as well!!!
Still gotta laugh huh!!!

Yep no one flies here anymore with airlines pulling out left, right and center leaving us with the expensive only airlines and one or two who think they are low cost, especially that airline which used to have the word jersey in its name.

Yes and no. You don’t wait for hours at security any more as everyone now ‘trickles’ through after checking in, rather than 150 people per flight heading through once the flight was called to the gate.
Jersey airport was once the busiest in Europe. But this is 2010… wake up. It’s quiet now because no one wants to come to Jersey. Jersey’s traditional market (the golden oldies) are sadly dying out. If I lived in the UK, and I’m no golden oldie, would I consider Jersey over Spain/Italy for a week?
Its not quiet because the airport isn’t very nice. Check here for reviews: http://www.airlinequality.com/Airports/Airport_forum/jer.htm
And number 9:
Starbucks! – Has proved hugely popular
The beautiful security fence – Required by CAA (would they really have done it if not?)
Picturesque bollards – Agreed, waste of money.
Easyjet flights to Luton – What’s the problem with trying new routes? Is there not another thread on here bemoaning them disappearing??
BMI flights to Heathrow – As above. Shouted for by the business community, but then they never used it. Also a route that was lost under the previous director Mike Lanyon
That control tower – Yeah I would *love* working in a 1950s building stuffed with asbestos.
Loss of access to the Viewing Gallery for non-flyers – An airport is for people flying somewhere. Not for randoms who want to come and watch the planes with a flask of tea.
Ruining the departure hall – Most passengers I have spoken to say its a great improvement over the past year or two. And it makes money. No one’s forcing you to buy anything… What’s the problem?

some of the commets about the departure hall are laughable , its been brought upto date and is far better than what was before, its still friendly and has its own charm there are new local shops in the hall and its far more user friendly,Jersey is a great little airport thats been brought up to the 21st century

He pobably left through others meddling, but the way things are going we will be left with only Amy Johnston airways anyway.

Ok im not an expert on the ins and outs of airport management so im not going to talk about something i know nothing about.
However…
There are a few things that are completly irrelevant to this argument.
Starbucks: who cares what vendor is selling coffee to waiting passengers? and the experience ive had the coffee is damn good!
Shopping: Im pretty sure the primary function of an airport is so that passengers can safely board a plane to said destination. That is the primary function and so that must take priority. Every thing else has to fit around that. So if that means its harder to get to the shops so be it.
If your that desperate to get perfume or booze or whatever else they sell in them shops then buy it in town. jeeez.
Anyway. With regards to the actual story here. i think Julian has done a good job and the fact tourists dont want to come here anymore aint his fault. With regards to his salary. ummm yes he gets paid alot becuase he’s running an airport. the same if you were running a bank or shipping company etc etc. you get what you pay for.
You want a cheaper boss then you will see the airport turn to poop. All you haters are just jealous if you ask me.

#16 Ron, I’ll disagree with you on the staff. Okay the shop staff are unfriendly and unhelpful but that’s not unusual here so fair enough. Still I have always found the check-in and security staff really friendly. Either I’ve always caught them on a good day or you on a bad day I guess.
#19 Starbucks, seriously? And even if you do like Starbucks this one is frustratingly slow. I assume it’s only due to lack of choice that it gets any custom whatsoever.

I do not know if this comment is relevent to the posted article but the closure of the departure hall to the general public was a disaster to the business premises at the airport. Too much security at the airport and ferry terminal as well in my opinion. We find it difficult to attract tourists but we have everything for terrorists. Welcome to Jersey.

I have no problem with Starbucks, but I am surprised that companies owned by Jersey residents and thus paying tax in Jersey are not given concessions in such prime sites. But I don’t suppose the States do joined up thinking.

Lots of security at the airport and no customers to protect. Some new buildings as well. This is the way forward.

What, above Heathrow?!! I doubt it. Even in the 80s Heathrow was one of the busiest airports in the world.
Now if you want to see an airport to avoid, then its Heathrow.

Somehow our principal hub of those visiting Jersey as a tourist resort, is now bent on regulation and more punitive regulation and this makes it very unfriendly for that very important first impression for those first time visitors. Julian Green did some good things, but he will be remembered chiefly for the bollards and those no parking cones, which remain a contradiction in the drop off zone in departures.

@27
It was the second busiest airport in the UK heathrow was third.
Its worked out by the average landings/arrivals during opening hours. Jersey airport averaged more than 1 per minute.
However, this figure does include General Aviation (club aircraft) and private charter flights.
