FIRST it was petroleum prices, now it is the cost of heating oil. In both cases the Channel Island Competition Regulatory Authority (CICRA) announces that it cannot explain why price differences between the UK and Jersey are increasing (JEP, 3 February).

From John Dix.
THE two current hot topics are unemployment and immigration.
We hear much from our ministers about initiatives to create jobs coupled with their inability to prevent or reduce immigration. The States cannot create jobs unless they take on more public sector workers which the taxpayers and voters are unlikely to accept. They cannot even encourage local employers to take on more staff except by reducing the mindless increase in bureaucracy required to run a business. All they can do is create an environment which encourages local employers to employ local employees.
