From John Clennett.
THERE appears to be a major misconception among members of the public, and one which is being actively fomented by certain politicians, to the effect that the present financial crisis – and in particular the projected deficit for 2010 of £64million, – is the result of uncontrolled States expenditure and that the position could, or should, be remedied by drastic reductions in States expenditure.

From M Messiter.
SO the States of Jersey police want Asbos (Anti-Social Behaviour Orders) to deal with our troublesome youths. Not surprising when you remember that the States police has to be headed by an officer brought in from the UK, which leads to the tendency to view the English way as the best, even the only way, of doing things. I am very surprised that Senator Ian Le Marquand agrees – I would have expected his experience in the court to have led him to the opposite view.

From Nathan Jordan.
WHEN I was studying in Paris, I was asked to give a short presentation on Victoria College. I mentioned the quaint fashion of teachers wearing robes (my father tells me this was also a good way to keep chalk off his suit) and also about the house system. One girl asked that if such schools were private, why were they referred to as ‘public’? I explained that this was because any child could study there. My British friend then claimed that in practice there were minimum standards of intelligence and fees to be met.
