A flood of money saving ideas that don’t add up to much

Wow! See how easy it is to make savings in the States? All you’ve got to do is set up a website, give it a catchy name such as Value Jersey, launch a Twitter account and wait for the dozens of fantastic money saving ideas to flood in from the public.

Last Sunday’s tragedy brings home how important it is to protect our public services

It’s difficult to exaggerate the enormity of the tragic events on Sunday – but some people will try.  It obviously arouses strong emotions in all of us but I prefer to keep mine to myself. I think that the best thing most of us can do is carry on as before.

A robust economy with a healthy democracy, or something else

Like most Islanders I take a very keen interest in what is reported in the columns of this newspaper. Apart from keeping up to date with Island affairs, it’s also a fruitful source of material for a column such as this.

Not much of a legacy

There are two things that can be said with some certainty about our current Chief Minister. He doesn’t tell porky pies, and he’s not boastful.

The customer is king – so if the customer wants to shop on a Sunday, shops should be open

IT was definitely over-the-top, but also thought-provoking and worthy of comment. Would you pay more for the privilege of living in Jersey?

It’s shameless plagiarism, I know, but I’m going to repeat what a fellow commentator wrote in a sister publication a few weeks ago.

We should encourage a few more golden geese and promote some alternatives

Sometimes I feel a bit of a traitor to Jersey’s finance industry.

Will our policy makers embrace such innovation? I have my doubts…

We’re all so busy planning for the future that we sometimes forget to look back. However, failing to learn from the past is a cardinal sin in my book.

Moaning for Jersey

If there’s one thing I try to do in this column, it’s present an alternative view. It may not always be popular, appreciated or even feasible, but it is hopefully different to mainstream thinking. It’s certainly not just an opportunity to moan.

Many thnk the only kind of growth we should be striving for is ‘green’ growth

I’ve never really been a strong supporter of the environmental movement. It appeared to be dominated by extremists and tree huggers, and ignored the harsh economic realities of life.
