Call for review of publicly funded broadband scheme

QUESTIONS are being asked about the viability of a £40 million scheme to put superfast broadband into every Island home.

And two internationally owned telecom companies say there should be a wider review of the proposed JT Gigabit Jersey project to ensure that public money is not about to be wasted.

They also believe that JT is getting an unfair advantage and argue that the contract to install the supporting fibre network should be put out to tender.

The likelihood of the scheme going ahead significantly increased last week when Senator Philip Ozouf was re-elected as Treasury Minister.

Earlier in the month he finalised a publicly backed £19 million package of financial support for the project.

However, the Senator gave an assurance that all telecom businesses would get equal access to the JT fibre network to ensure that fair competition was available for the benefit of consumers.

Rival telecom company Cable & Wireless has written to States Members to complain about public money subsidising a commercial venture.

Just plain common sense from from Mr Hughes. Shame our beloved Treasury Minister cannot see the problem of spending public money. When fiber optics come to my door in the UK, it was done by private enterprise.

Why does cash rich JT deed help?

I subscribe to a 2 meg broadband and mostly get 250k or about 12% of what I pay for. Par for the course with JT and I dare say when we have fibre optic I will also get 10-15% of the advertised speed on the lowest tarrif. If you ring to complain it costs you £1 a minute to do so. A few years back the quarterly rental became the monthly rental and strangely no one but me seemed to notice so overnight the rental went up by 300%. People in the UK can’t beleive when I tell them that every so often the broadband goes down and will not reconnect until you switch off and switch on the box of tricks and if you look for the option to stay connected in the setup menu it has been disabled. Saves JT from investing in better bandwidth and inconveniences the poor broadband subscriber.

Wake up and let’s have competition on home land lines so we can stop being ripped off by JT.

mobitel can offer 4g speeds now without fibre optics at half the price of broadband now. Its all about vested interest and lobbying which is another word for corruption.

Broadband everywhere can and does go down and requires a switch off and switch on again periodically. Usually it is when something has been rebooted at the exchange.
Anything that has been disabled can be reenabled if you have the right access and why do you need a JT box of tricks? Buy your own router and you will have full control over your end.
