FORMER Jersey resident Sir David Murray has effectively been cleared of involvement in tax cheating during his time in charge of the former Rangers Football Club.
The result was released this week of what was known as the ‘big tax case’ that had undermined the final years of Sir David’s reign at the football club.
The outcome was that the former Rangers club structure was successful in an appeal against a multi-million pound tax bill over the use of Jersey-based Employee Benefit Trusts as a tax avoidance scheme.
The appeal came in the form of a tax tribunal that was heard in front of three judges and held over 29 days. Two of the three judges supported the appeal and delivered a majority verdict that allowed it in principle.
