AN agreement has been reached for Bahrain’s telecom company to buy the part of Cable & Wireless/Sure that includes its Jersey operation for US$680 million.

Subject to approval by competition regulators, the deal will be concluded at the end of March next year.

But it is expected to be ‘business as usual’, according to the chief executive of Cable & Wireless/Sure in Jersey, Graham Hughes.

He said: ‘There are no plans to change the structures and we are looking forward to working with the team at Bahrain Telecommunications Company.’

And there was me hoping that the Vodafone purchase of C&W for £1bn would have seen full UK Vodafone presence on the island in a move that would have shaken up the local telecoms industry beyond belief and remove UK roaming charges when on the same network.

Oh well hopefully I can roam without additional costs when I go to Bahrain, are they still rioting there???
