Local vegetable supplier to be sold to major UK company

ONE of Jersey’s largest vegetable producers will be sold to a major UK company in the New Year.

Amal-Grow is due to bought by Albert Bartlett and Sons, one of the leading suppliers of root vegetables in the UK. The deal is due to be finalised early next year.

The local business employs up to 60 people at the busiest time of the year and the organisation’s directors have said that the company will continue as usual.

The business, which is based at Beauchamp Farm in St John, offers potatoes and seasonal vegetables and was founded by Tony Le Brun. It has been supplying Islanders’ dinner tables for more than 35 years.

  Amal Grow is still owned until it is sold by a Jersey company so it will pay tax for 2012.
  
  Its tax liability in Jersey will cease yet another loss of income for the Jersey Tax department.
  
  What an incredibly stupid system.
  
  This means that the Jersey tax paying person will over time, have heavier taxes imposed to keep Jersey financially afloat as businesses owned off island but still trading and taking the islanders money give nothing back by way of taxes to Jersey.

    And the low wage immigrant workers will be entitled to welfare after 5 years – so not tax paid and a welfare burden – could not make it up …

    What are you on about? It is a trading company and pays tax at 0% for 2012. Ownership is irrelevant.

    i did wonder, thanks for the reply davey west.
    i start the new year with the feeling that the ordinary working person, is doomed.
    with little or no extra work around there is little chance of climbing out of the hole. if some found 2012 hard 2013 will be tougher , imho
