A TOTAL of 24 Island students have secured a place on a scheme designed to give them an insight into what it is like working in the finance industry.

The youngsters have been offered placements with 18 firms as part of the Life in Finance initiative organised by Jersey Finance in partnership with Careers Jersey.
Placement

The school age youngsters will get the opportunity to undertake a work placement for one or two weeks in July next year with one of the participating firms.

Life in Finance takes students through the life-cycle of a typical working career. It is designed to educate the students about what a career in the finance industry involves and provides an understanding of the industry itself.

The young people found out about the scheme at a ‘meet and greet’ session held recently at the Hotel de France.

My advice to them is do not do it. There will be no finance industry left in Jersey by the time they get to thirty however should they choose this route Jersey Finance will show them the ropes for working somewhere else in finance.

You have to feel for the young generation growing up in a world where 50% youth unemployment is now the norm, where the prospect of ever getting a pension is almost zero, where the standard of living is, for the first time since the war, expected to decline over their lifetime. And Jersey just does not look like a good long term bet.

When I left De La Salle it was a case of ‘pick which bank you want to work for’ if that was your choice; now there are only 24 work experience places available?

At least I have never voted for any Senator elected to our States in the intervening period so my conscience is clear, but it is small comfort when so many in this island do make the wrong choice at election time.

James, when I became of childbearing age in the 1960s I foresaw that bringing children into the world would not be doing them any longb term favour. Events have proved me correct and the trend is not going to reverse, despite short term prosperity for some.

The prospect of economic growth in China, India and even Brazil is hastening the day when the entire inhabited world will become totally unsustainable. Unless we can extract food and power from unwanted babies and non productive old people. There won’t be any other resources left to produce things from.
