Visitors to Jersey should be warned as to what may befall them !

Last week, during the moring rush hour, I witnesed a SoJ police officer pull over a UK registered car because the driver was not wearing her seat belt. She was driving at 3 mph !!! Now correct me if I am wrong, but I have yet to hear of a road traffic accident where an un belted driver is ejected from his or her vehicle and injurs an innocent by stander !!! (My understanding is that an unbelted driver who is injured would predujice any claim for damages, and that is why I and my passengers always wear their seat belts)

However, two young french visitors get beaten up by some local low life and the ofenders basically get let off.

Why do our Police have the resources to monitor motorists in such a way but seldom seem to be about when real trouble is occuring?

On the subject of speed limites, what about giving the majority of responsible motorists some credit !

Today I was driving along a lane in St Saviours which had a posted speed limit of 40 mph. But I was actually doing about 20 mph because that was the speed that I felt was safe for the conditions. However, approaching a narrower part of the lane, I reduced my speed to about 6 mph. Why? Because a young mother pushing a double buggy was walking the other way!

However, at some point in the day, I drove through the underpass and along the esplanade. Along with other traffic, I was possibly exceeding the 30 mph speed limit ! The reason that I don't know if I was 'speeding' was that I was not looking at my speedometer, but looking where I was going and taking into account the possible actions of other road users, which included other cars as well as pedestrians and cyclists !

Without stating the obvious, this is what safe, responsible motoring is all about !

This is hilarious and it is good to see that I am not alone in thinking that Stuart, the JDA and even the meagre party Time 4 Change are useless in running the Island. Philip Ozouf got my vote in the last elections because he works hard. He is intelligent. He slices through his critics and like mentioned he behaves in a mature and professional manner. Nellie needs to start smelling the coffee.

Mike you are fighting a losing battle I'm so sorry to say. Same old story its who you know, how much money you have, and if you are in the social network.

How will we ever rid ourselves of those poiticians? We think we are safe at election time yet each time the public are hoodwinked.

I think this new development looks fantastic and is totally in keeping with the area - The previous structure was totally inadequate and well past its sell by date.

My wife and I have just had a week off at home and this was one of the venues we visited. If Jersey is to be attractive to both locals who chose to holiday at home and visitors, it needs to have up to date facilities such as this. Yes, St Ouens bay needs to be preserved, but it needs to have decent facilities to allow people to enjoy the bay to its full extent.

For #1 to suggest that the planning authoriities have acted inappropriately is very narrow minded.

Perhaps if such developments had been allowed 20 years ago, along with the provision of other facilities such as beach showers, Jersey's tourism industry may have not declined in the way it has.

The sooner Le Braye Cafe and the Watersplash are re-developed, the better as far as I am concerned. The fact that a replacement structure may be bigger than the one it replaces is not really an issue

Yes Nellie the "Modified Moped" as I said should be given one chance to be reunited with it's exhaust muffler after which the police should have the power to confiscate it and have it crushed! One passed me on Victoria Avenue the other evening making more noise than a Eurofighter taking off!And there is a habit amongst large and powerful motorcycle owners, especially ones who park behind Sand Street car park to announce to the world their departure home at 4.30p.m.by pulling away at full throttle and then hitting the brakes! One day shattered glass from a fourth floor window is going to take out somebody as a result of this behaviour.I am not a spoilsport in fact I am a lover of speed, properly controlled and in the right place. If your idea of an ideal commuting motorbike in and out of St Helier is something that Mr Rossi would be at home on all well and good, just take it to Brands or the Isle of Man if you want to let it go, not Sand St.
As for speeding cars, my experience is that whenever something undertakes or overtakes me above the speed limit making alot of noise on this Island it normally has a wing on the back,a large add on exhaust with again no discernable siliencer, and it looks as if it has been assembled from about four other cars, one of which was once a Subaru or a close Japanese relative. Not too difficult to spot I would have thought?
The other thing we all need to remember as drivers, particularly with more Continental visitors coming over on short visits is that when crossing roads these pedestrian's natural instinct is to look the wrong way first when stepping off a pavement. There is however no excuse for locals who step off without looking at all!

After reading some of the comments on here, I feel I need to say my piece (I am usually the quiet one), however the JEP article leads the reader to believe we are asking for kitchens to be built in schools (which we are not), this would lead the reader to assume that funding would be required from the tax payer. We are not looking for kitchens to be built, but to outsource i.e. looking at under used kitchens or pubs/hotels, who already have a business, where catering could be done from there, amongst other off site options (a scheme of off site food preparation has been tried and tested in certain areas in the UK and has proved to be very successful).

The survey carried out, was not conducted from a quick chat in the play ground, we have spent some months completing the survey from the schools our children attend and from parenting groups etc. Parents completing the survey confirmed they would be prepared to pay on average £2.00/£2.50 per day, which is what they would also be prepared to pay and already pay for a packed lunch.

The survey was a brief survey in which the questions were aimed at those with children of primary school age and was not a debate on spending tax payers money, as we have no intention on spending tax payers money. We are also tax payers!

In response to some of the comments on here, regarding Kim’s comments about her boy being a fussy eater, this is Kim’s personal observation and not the opinion of all the people completing the survey and certainly not a reflection on what we are trying to achieve. I know that Kim’s children eat a wide variety of foods and I think she was trying to say she saw a change in his eating habits moving from a cooked lunch at pre – school to a packed lunch (she wasn’t saying he never eats anything).

My personal reasons for becoming involved in this campaign is for my children not so that I can have an easy life and shun my parental responsibilities as I do make my son’s packed lunch with love and care and believe it or not I do pop the odd sausage/pasta salad etc in there, (my son loves all types of food and eats all his packed lunch day in day out and my daughter currently at a private pre-school is getting a hot lunch every day and loves it). I grew up in the UK and had cooked school lunches (no slop), well balanced healthy lunches (with fish and chips on a Friday) and feel that Jersey is a little behind the times and with the right people and businesses the cooked lunch option can be achieved (again without tax payers money).

I cook for my family every night and don’t want people to think that this campaign is to make a cooked lunch the main meal of the day and take away from“family time”, but again it is about choice and letting the children/families have a choice as to whether or not they have a cooked lunch or take a packed lunch, because we know that not all families will want to have the cooked lunch option, but in the winter months they may be more popular than the summer months, but just to know it is there for people.

I like to see my children eat and want to see a cooked lunch provided for primary age children, this campaign is to try and get people on board, whether it be in the catering industry with the relevant facilities to try and make it work and not spend tax payers money on setting up kitchens (for a developing business, not within the schools as we are aware that this is not an option and again it is not about using tax payers money). Jamie Oliver has shown that the outside catering option can work in schools and with all the great local produce on the Island it would be nice to see the children enjoy it with their school friends.

It has been scientifically proven that a healthy breakfast and a well balanced, healthy lunch aids concentration, learning and play.

Because they made people itch the environment department killed them, what happens if a human hurts another they just get off scot free. but the moths didn't!!

What happens if they go on more trees is environment department going to cut down all the trees jersey.

THERE MUST HAVE BEEN ANOTHER WAY!!!

Tricky, you have missed the point, intentionally or otherwise. While it is clear that you worship the finance industry, it is equally clear that the world would not end if it were not here!

More to the point, the toilets will still need servicing and the jobs will still be there. The payment of GST and Income tax by the finance sector does not disentitle the manual workers to a reasonable rise. £1,000 per year is peanuts compared to a large amount of "salary reviews" within the firms. It has been said elsewhere on this forum that we do not owe our living to the finance industry. I would endorse that sentiment.

More to the point, the toilets will still need servicing and the jobs will still be there. The payment of GST and Income tax by the finance sector does not disentitle the manual workers to a reasonable rise. £1,000 per year is peanuts compared to a large amount of “salary reviews” within the firms. It has been said elsewhere on this forum that we do not owe our living to the finance industry. I would endorse that sentiment.

"well think again, his decision to add GST on the shelf instead of at the till was the worse decision ever and his reason for doing so was sad and pathetic"

Really? The reason for doing so was to try to prevent big UK chains adding 3% to pre-priced products. So you think trying to save Jersey consumers 3% is sad and pathetic?
