Island residents aged 16 and over whose names appear on the Electoral List, published in each parish annually, are eligible to vote.
A Franchise Form, distributed with the parish rate forms each year, and which is updated the day prior to each nomination meeting, has to be completed. If you have not received these forms, contact your parish hall.
Voting takes place at designated polling stations, normally the parish hall. Inform the election official of your name and address when entering the polling station. Contested elections, whether it be for politicians or Honorary police officers, traditionally take place on a weekday, often a Wednesday, with the polling stations open 8am - 8pm.
A notice is placed in the Official Gazette, which is published in the Jersey Evening Post on two occasions to notify the public that, if they will be away or are ill and would like to register for a postal vote, they should contact the Judicial Greffe in writing or complete an application form for a postal vote. Once the request is received, the ballot papers and other relevant documents are sent directly to the person. The forms must be completed and returned to the Judicial Greffe by 12 noon, the day before the election. It is then given to the Returning Officer (normally a Jurat). Those who have applied to vote using a postal vote must cast their own ballots. There is no “proxy” voting.
There is now the facility for people who have commitments, which could either be work or because they are the main carer for a relative, to apply for a postal vote. Also in place is the facility to make a pre-poll vote in person at the Judicial Greffe.
The Judicial Greffe can be reached at: Judicial Greffe, Royal Court House, Royal Square, St. Helier JE1 1JG or telephone 01534 441300; Fax: 01534 441399.
