Communication is always important when you live on an Island.
Internet
Internet access is available in Jersey through a number of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) both on-Island and off-Island. Because of technical issues broadband is only available from on-island ISPs, while restrictions on interconnection to Local Rate (0844 and 0845) and Freephone (0800) Internet services, means not all dialup ISPs are accessible from Jersey. According to the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority the number of ISP and Internet access accounts among all operators in Jersey grew by 14.5% overall during 2006.
The JCRA estimates that there were 25,939 registered ISP accounts at the end of 2006, an increase of 3,435 on 2005. This would represent a penetration of about 73% of households which is above the UK at 57%. Broadband penetration by household is 57% which is above the UK at 40%.
Getting connected is fairly straightforward through a number of ISPs who offer pay-as-you go or pre-paid dialup options and a variety of broadband ADSL packages. ADSL is more expensive per month but you only need to be online for around 2 hours a day for it to be the more economical option. Around the Island, and particularly in St Helier, there are a growing number of Wi-Fi hotspots that can be used by the mobile surfer often available within the more sedate surroundings of internet cafés. Among the WiFi hotspots are The Atlantic Hotel, Café Jac, Chateau La Chaire, The Elizabeth Harbour Terminal, Hotel La Place, Atlantic Hotel, Jersey Airport, Jersey Pottery, Longueville Manor Hotel, the Royal Hotel, Newtel Solutions Internet Centre in Colomberie and the Jersey Pottery Cafe also in Colomberie.
Telephone landlines
Phone lines are connected through Jersey Telecom and you will need to apply for a line by visiting the retail outlet Queen Street, St. Helier. Monthly line rental charges depend on the tariff selected. Local calls from regular phone lines to another local number cost seven pence per 30 minutes. Coin operated call boxes, which accept 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2 coins, can be found throughout the Island.
Mobile phones: Mobile phones can be bought and connected at the various outlets of Jersey Telecom, Cable & Wireless (Sure) and Airtel-Vodafone.
Mobile phones
If you are on a regular contract or a post paid mobile services package, which offers a roaming service when you are out of the Island, pay attention when making a call from some parts of the eastern and northern parishes. These areas are fairly close to the French mainland and you may find yourself logged onto the French Telecommunications network and that ‘local’ calls become very expensive.
Mobile phone users from the UK can use a regular contract phone whilst staying in Jersey. Prepaid (pay as you go) users should contact their network providers before trying to roam. For more information, telephone Jersey Telecom Mobile Services Helpline by dialling 152, or Sure on 0808 10 15 247 or Airtel on 121.
Post
Jersey postage stamps must be used on all mail posted from Jersey. Stamps can be bought from most newsagents or postal outlets. At the time of publication it cost 35 pence to send a letter within Jersey and 39 pence to send a letter to the UK, the Isle of Man and other areas within the Channel Islands. For up to date information on postal rates visit the Jersey Post website.
