THERE are 12 Constables who are the elected municipal heads of each parish and are Members of the States by virtue of their office.
Constables have been Members from the earliest record of States meetings, being one of the three ‘Etats’ (estates) constituting the States Assembly. They are elected for three-year terms by the electors of their parish. Until this election, elections were held at different times during the year, whenever the term of office ended.
It was felt that the elections for Constable should all be held on the same day, and nine Constables agreed. Of those nine, five were re-elected unopposed at the nomination meetings – in the parishes of St Brelade, St Martin, St Ouen, St Saviour and Trinity. In the other four parishes, there will be elections – in St Clement, where three candidates are standing; and in St Lawrence, St Mary and St Peter where two candidates are standing.
• Polling Day is Wednesday, 15 October.
