Deputies
A RECORD 63 candidates are standing in the Deputies’ elections to fill 25 seats.
There are a total of 29 seats, but four Deputies have been re-elected unopposed for a further three-year term. They are Deputy Roy Le Hérissier (St Saviour No 3), Deputy James Reed (St Ouen), Deputy Anne Pryke (Trinity) and Deputy Carolyn Labey (Grouville).
Most parishes are self-contained constituencies, but five are split into districts to account for greater populations.
St Helier and St Saviour and split into three districts; St Brelade, St Clement and St Lawrence have two districts; and the other parishes have one district.
The biggest district is St Helier No 3, which has four Deputies while St Helier No 1 and St Helier No 2 have three. St Brelade No 2, St Clement, St Lawrence, St Saviour No 1 and St Saviour No 2 all have two Deputies.
The office of Deputy of the States has been in existence for over 150 years. A Law was passed in 1856 providing for the elections of 14 Deputies, three from St. Helier and one from each of the other parishes, but this number has gradually increased to the current 29.
The nomination meetings for Deputies took place on Tuesday 4 November and the elections are on Wednesday 26 November.
