Election platform:
After 15 years of serving our Island, several electors have asked me to continue because of my ability to take on challenging tasks with enthusiasm, hard work and dedication. During the last six years I have been entrusted with the transformation of the benefit system. I successfully debated legislation which introduced the new Income Support Scheme which has helped many people to achieve a fair and equitable level of support. I was also pleased to make GP prescriptions free. If re-elected I would seek more community health screening and prevention through a co-ordinated provision between consultants, GPs and pharmacies.

The ageing population is one of the highest priorities that the Island faces and I would want to ensure that the value of the State pension is protected and also bring forward an equitable solution to ensure that the cost of long-term care for those who need it is supported. I recognise the importance of having a thriving and strong economy and believe that now we have made the major fiscal changes required, we can move forward with support for our industries. A strong economy must benefit the natural and built environment, together with the social needs of our Island.

Proposers: Michael Emmanuel, Martin Hebden, Marianne Sunier, Ron Satchell, Pat Davis, Michael Cotillard, Lesley L’Enfant, Jeanie Rice, Carl Blackmore and Claire Etienne.

Nomination speech:
Social Security Minister Paul Routier was nominated by Mike Emmanuel, who said that the 59-year-old had served in the States as a Deputy in St Helier No 1 for nine years, and as a Senator for the last six. Mr Emmanuel said that Senator Routier had three grown-up children, was still involved in the men’s fashion business that he set up in 1975 and had a strong social conscience. During his States career, he added, Senator Routier had been president of the Social Security Committee and had sat on Finance and Economics, Housing and Sport, Leisure and Recreation. He added that in his last six-year term the Senator had introduced the Income Support benefit package, a minimum wage, mandatory time off for workers and protection from unfair dismissal – demonstrating both intelligence and energy. Mr Emmanuel said that the Senator was the president of Jersey Mencap, and the chairman of Les Amis.
