Health
Jersey Health Scheme
The Jersey Health Scheme is administered by the Social Security Department.
Unlike the National Health Service in the UK, doctors do not have service contracts with the States to provide a service to any particular patient. Each doctor can set the fee they wish to charge, for the service they give. You must pay the full fee unless you have a Health Benefits card.
Health Benefits Card
If you’ve been in Jersey for six months, you can apply for a Health Benefits card, which will ensure that doctor’s charges and prescription charges are reduced. The Social Security Department pays the subsidy. If you are Jersey born and are attending school in Jersey, you can claim your card on or after your 16th birthday. You should show the card when you visit the doctor or take a prescription to a chemist. You can be prosecuted if you sell, lend, give away, destroy or deface your card. People on low income may be eligible for a Health Insurance Exception card, which allows you to see a doctor and to obtain prescriptions free of charge. The Social Security Department also administer a Household Medical Account programme to help people to budget for medical expenses.
General Hospital
The General Hospital is based in Gloucester Street, St. Helier. The States of Jersey Ambulance Service provides the Island with 24-hour emergency paramedic cover and a patient transport service caters for those needing transport to outpatient clinics as well as day centres. Telephone: 01534 622000.
More information about all of these services can be found at the States of Jersey website.
