The Island has a strong tradition of voluntary work and a network of support agencies to offer help when it’s needed.
Citizen’s Advice Bureau
This agency, managed by Francis Le Gresley, provides free, confidential and impartial advice to Island residents on a variety of issues including consumer matters, money, employment, housing, benefits, health, relationships and legal matters. Website: www.cab.org.je
Domestic violence
Help is available for abusers and those who are abused.
• The Jersey Women’s Refuge helps victims of domestic abuse and provides a sanctuary. Telephone: 0800 7356836.
• The Domestic Violence Unit and the Family Protection Team at the States Police work closely with the Jersey Women’s Refuge. They protect the victim from further violence, ensure the safety of the children and hold the offender if necessary. Telephone: 112 or 999 in cases of emergency and 612612 for non-emergency situations.

Drug & Alcohol abuse
The Jersey Alcohol and Drug Service offers counselling services to those affected by drug and/or alcohol abuse and their families. The service is free and confidential and is based at Gloucester Lodge 79 Stopford Road Telephone: 445000.

Human rights
The Human Rights (Jersey) Law 2000 marks a significant development in ensuring respect for human rights in Jersey. It incorporates rights and freedoms guaranteed under the European Convention on Human Rights into domestic law, enabling cases concerning rights given under the Convention to be brought in the courts in Jersey, whereas previously they had to be taken to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
Jersey Advisory & Conciliation Service
JACS provides free independent and impartial advice to employers, employees and trade unions on a wide range of employment issues and assists, through conciliation, when disputes arise. Website: www.jacs.org.je.
Legal Aid
Jersey’s legal profession provides a service to those who cannot afford a lawyer or who cannot obtain one. The Acting Bâtonnier is currently Advocate Sarah Fitz. To apply for legal aid, the person must complete legal aid application forms that can be obtained by email acting.batonnier@ogier.com, post or collecting from Whitley Chambers Don Street St Helier JE4 9WG. Trading Standards
The Trading Standards Service is responsible for enforcing consumer protection laws covering product safety, trade descriptions, trade marks, distance selling and weights and measures. The office, located in the Central Market, is where consumers can drop in, to obtain free confidential advice on how to progress complaints or obtain general advice. Hours of operation: 9am to 1.00 pm and 2pm to 5pm Monday to Friday (excluding Thursday afternoons when the market is closed).

The 11th Great Garden Bird Watch took place over the weekend, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February. JEP readers were asked to get on board to help monitor bird life in the Island.
