Utilities
The things every household needs.
Electricity
Electricity in the Island is supplied by the Jersey Electricity Company which was established in April 1924 and now has a £75 million turnover based on its monopoly business. The company provides a range of tariffs which offer the usual off peak discounts. More details can be found at their website.
Gas
Gas is distributed to local homes and establishments in two distinctly different ways. Mains gas customers are serviced through a network of underground mains via a production plant, where the LPG gas is processed whilst an automated cylinder filling plant provides for bottled gas and bulk tank users. To hook up to mains gas, contact the Jersey Gas Company Limited.
Oil
Domestic heating oil to run the boiler and heater in your home can be bought from the following suppliers:
Fuel Supplies Shell Distributor: La Collette, St. Helier – Telephone: 709800.
(Esso) Petroleum Distributors: La Collette, St. Helier – Telephone: 826800.
Total Jersey Limited, La Collette, St Helier – Telephone: 725927
Water
The Jersey Waterworks Company Limited was founded in 1863 and water was first supplied in 1869 from a well at Vicart in St Lawrence. Today, water rates are dependent on the rateable value of the property. But not all properties are connected to mains water and mains drainage. If the property has its own water supply (well, bore hole or rainwater catchment) no water rates are imposed. Contact JerseyWater for more information.
Sewerage
Properties not connected to the mains drainage use soakaways or private treatment systems. The States of Jersey Public Services Committee operate tankers that will empty soakaways or storage tanks as necessary. Households that cannot be connected to mains sewer and have septic tanks are allowed two 750 gallon tanks free of charge per calendar year. Septic tanks normally are emptied within five working days of placing the request. For more information, call Public Service’s Septic Tank Division on 448524.
