Effective design
Designing an effective advertisement
As an advertiser, you will want your advertisement to stand out and be seen. This section will give you some basic guidelines for designing an effective newspaper advertisement. You will need to organise your copy. Copy is an advertising term for the content of an advert, which includes the text, logos and any pictures you are using.
Header
This is an important part of the advertisement. It should draw the reader’s attention to the copy text. The header should be punchy and straight to the point. It should also be in a larger and bolder typeface than the rest of the content.
Images
You might wish to choose pictures of the items you are promoting, and as a rule, try to keep the picture simple, so that it stands out. Busy pictures tend to detract from the actual item you are promoting. If you are using more than one picture you should decide whether they will have equal emphasis in the advert or if one will be more prominent and therefore larger.
Copy text
The information in the main body of text will advise the reader of the benefits of the product, promotion, service or offer that you are advertising. This section is important and should be clear and precise.
Logo and Address
These are among the most important elements of your advertisement because your potential customers need to know who is advertising and where to go to buy what you are offering. Your company name or logo should be prominent. The logo may be placed at the top of the advertisement, or at the bottom along with the address, phone number and any other contact details.
