18 escapes from Les Chênes in five months

THERE have been 18 escapes from Les Chênes Residential School in the past five months, it was revealed in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

And the facilities are not good enough for dealing with young offenders, said the Magistrate, Ian Le Marquand.Mr Le Marquand spoke during a case involving two escaped youths, one of whom has now been on the run from the centre six times this year.The Magistrate was due to attend a meeting this morning with Kathie Bull and it is understood that chief officers from Education and Home Affairs will also be there to discuss the implications of her controversial report on education.The report condemned the States for a lack of provision for children with emotional and behavioural problems, as well as the security arrangements at Les Chênes.
