Caught on camera in St Peter: 16 honesty box thieves

Monday 22nd December 2003, 12:00AM GMT.

TWO people have been referred to the Magistrate’s Court, and 14 have had to appear at parish hall inquiries, for helping themselves to fresh produce from a roadside stall without putting money in an honesty box.

The offenders were caught on surveillance cameras which were installed by grower Carlton Le Feuvre.

He and his wife Kristina run the popular Amaizin Maze attraction there. There has always been a roadside stall situated on the main road near Mr Le Feuvre’s La Hougue Farm in St Peter. However, when they found that a small minority of passers-by were taking advantage of it by helping themselves to fresh flowers and other produce without putting any money in an honesty box supplied for the purpose, they installed surveillance cameras to catch them.’Ninety-nine per cent of people who stop at our stall are honest,’ said Mrs Le Feuvre, ‘but the one per cent who are dishonest were making our stall unsustainable.’Fortunately we seem to have got on top of the problem that had been caused by a very few “”serial offenders”".

As a result we can go on providing the roadside service to our other loyal customers.’
