Vandals start fire in St Helier’s 1930s bus shelter

THE distinctive 1930s bus shelter at West Park was severely damaged last night when petrol was poured over seating and set alight.

The Fire Service were alerted shortly after 11 pm and managed to confine the blaze to seating at the rear of the shelter overlooking Victoria Avenue.

After inspecting the damage this morning, Parish of St Helier technical support officer Silvio Alves said wooden seating had been severely damaged and plaster was coming off the walls, but because the shelter was largely made from concrete the fire had not spread.He said the fire was particularly disappointing as the shelter, which is listed on the Island’s register of historic buildings as a building of local interest, had been renovated recently.
