Football:Tower juniors power on to final
Wednesday 7th January 2004, 12:00AM GMT.
FIRST TOWER under-18s continued their domination of junior football with a well-deserved 3-1 Tregear Cup semi-final victory over nearest rivals St Paul’s at Les Quennevais last night.
A full-blooded affair, with hard running, high early balls and lunging tackles relegating thoughtful passing and movement for much of the night, was sealed with two late second-half goals from substitute Ben Ahier – his first a real gem of a free-kick from 20-plus yards.Tower, defending Island champions, current league leaders and cup holders, were already ahead through a good 18-yard strike from the lively Ryan Durand, who capitalised on a rare defensive lapse just before half time.St Paul’s enjoyed a good share of possession but created little in the way of clear chances, with a free-kick from Brett Pitman that cannoned off the woodwork easily their best effort as they strove to turn the match.Pitman, looking suspiciously offside, displayed great footwork and balance in scoring a late consolation.Tower, impressively solid in defence and midfield, with some talented front runners, will meet the winners of tonight’s semi-final between Jersey Wanderers and Grouville (7.30 kick-off, Les Quennevais) in the final on 22 January at Springfield Stadium.
