Netball:Faith helps Saints shock Convent girls at the death
Tuesday 27th January 2004, 12:00AM GMT.
SHOCKWAVES have been reverberating around the netballing community today after St Brelade A beat Convent A last night in their Division Ia encounter at FB Fields.
Champions for six consecutive years until 2003 and currently second in the league, Convent were beaten, almost at the final whistle, 36-35 by the western side who, despite their win, remain in third place in the JNA Deutsche Bank Offshore Winter Netball League. The upset means that Convent are unlikely to take back their championship crown – although they could still, possibly, go equal top if they beat current champions St Clement A in their next two encounters this season.St Brelade goal attack Gill Kaye said: ‘We were trying to work out the last time we beat Convent – it must be six or more years ago – so we were very pleased.’She put their win down to the return of Faith Shalomon, who has been out of the game since early season.’She made a huge difference in defence and we had a new signing, Mandy Kenny, who has been out of the game entirely for a couple of seasons, back with us playing at wing attack.
In the last quarter Convent brought Mary Blampied on and it was goal for goal all the way through.
When the final whistle went we had to ask what the score was.She added: ‘The whole defensive trio, Faith, Sue Docherty and Nina Quinn were outstanding.
Probably for the first time this season we played as a team, we haven’t had the same seven playing since September and, while we know we can’t win the league, we are very pleased with the result.
‘Table-toppers St Clement A have no game this week.
Their next encounter with Convent A is next Tuesday, 3 February.
Other results: Division II: Convent C 50, Academicals B 27.
Division III: Convent E 40, St Lawrence C 17.
Division IV: St Lawrence D 21, St John 45; St Clement E 16, Academicals C 30.
