Top-up fees to cost £2.5m a year

UNIVERSITY top-up fees will cost taxpayers and parents in Jersey an extra £2.5 million a year.
The UK government’s Higher Education Bill, which scraped through the Commons by just five votes last night, will have a ‘significant’ impact on Jersey, it was announced today.The director of Education, Tom McKeon, has warned that the Island will have to find another £2.5 million a year on top of the £13 million already spent on higher education if the agreed legislation is passed.He said: ‘The changes that are likely to be introduced for September 2006 will have a significant impact on students in Jersey and on the cost of higher education in the Island.
In general terms the cost of higher education will increase by £2,000 per student per annum.’
