Badminton:Cann gets England call

JERSEY badminton star Elizabeth Cann has received the call-up to represent England in the Uber Cup – her sport’s equivalent of tennis’s Davis Cup – in the competition which begins on 7 February.

Her place in the team was assured when she was seeded No 4 in this weekend’s English Nationals competition in Manchester.Her three Uber Cup team-mates will be Tracy Hallam, Julia Mann and Jill Pritchard – seeded Nos 1, 2 and 3 respectively in the Nationals, and the Uber Cup takes place in Slovakia.’It’s always a bit nerve-racking going into the Nationals but I’ll try to keep my confidence up and do my best,’ Cann said.

‘We play in Slovakia next week and our first matches are against Slovakia, Slovenia and Portugal.

If we qualify for the next round we’ll probably play Germany, who will be tougher to beat.’
