Don’t waste old report on future, P & R urged

A SHELVED environmental report should be resurrected for the debate on the Strategic Plan and not just written off as a waste of time and money, according to pressure group Concern.

They want ‘Jersey in the Millennium – A Sustainable Future’, a report by the then States environment adviser, Dr Michael Romeril, which was commissioned by Policy and Resources but was never debated after its 2002 release, to be bought back into the debate on Jersey’s future and to be considered at future Imagine Jersey meetings.Dr Romeril’s successor, Environment Department director Chris Newton, has given an assurance that the report will be brought into the current debate on the Island’s future.The report emphasised the need for a controlled population under 89,000 – the figure Dr Romeril said was the largest population Jersey could have and still be a pleasant place to live in.
