Rugby:Banks blow hole in Guernsey title bid

Tuesday 3rd February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY United Banks did Beeches a big favour on Sunday afternoon, by beating Guernsey 2nds 40-5 in their latest Emeraude Lines JRA league game at Grainville.

For although Beeches currently top the league, they know that before this game the Guernsey side were only two points behind with two games in hand.As the league currently stands, Beeches have 24 points from ten games played; Guernsey 2nds have 22 points from nine games played and, behind them, Jersey RFC’s 2nds (who lost 29-20 to Les Quennevais, at Les Quennevais) and JUBRFC are vying for third place. In an open and entertaining game at Grainville Guernsey’s fate was effectively sealed when they lost their influential play-maker, stand-off Stuart Lloyd-Jones after ten minutes, through injury.Even so, the Banks still had it all to do against a large Guernsey pack who held their own for most of the match, until with 20 minutes of the game remaining they visibly wilted.Full round-up in today’s JEP, on sale 1.15 pm.
