Football:Ten goals as the Accies see red again
Wednesday 4th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.
SPORTING Academics’ season of woe continued last night as they were thumped 10-1 by the Portuguese Club of Jersey at Springfield.
Bottom of the flybe.
Combination Division I table, the game was over for the Accies by the 15th minute as they fell 4-1 behind. After re-grouping well for the remainder of the half they then conceded a goal in the opening minute of the second period to put them on the downward spiral again. After conceding a seventh goal things went from bad to worse as they lost their discipline resulting in three of their players being sent off – bringing their first-team dismissals to an alarming ten in the 14 games they’ve played in all competitions this season.Leighton Kelly was first to go after collecting a second caution for a foul and he was then joined by Keith Carthy, who recently returned from a ban, after he allegedly made an obscene gesture towards someone in the grandstand.Four minutes from the end goalkeeper Steve Godfrey, who had made a string of fine saves throughout, pulled down José-Manuel Vieira for a penalty kick when Vieira was about to go clear.Toni Cardoso, who produced a fine finish for Accies’ goal in the eleventh minute, took over the goalkeeper’s gloves and he finished a hero by saving Vieira’s twice-taken penalty kick, the first save ruled out as he moved off his goal-line.Pedro Lopes scored four times against his former club while Portuguese’s other goals were a brace apiece from Vieira, Vitor Santos and Nelson Mwakazi.Portuguese move up one place to fourth while the Accies’ eleventh consecutive league defeat was their fifth by a double-figure score.Portugzuese: Paulo Campos; Helio De Freitas, Antonio Costa, Pedro Maia, Ricardo Pereira, Marco Varela, Vitor Santos, Nelson Mwakazi, José-Manuel Vieira, José Costa, Pedro Lopes.
