Football:Ladies look to London

Thursday 5th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY’S Ladies football squad have been offered two matches in London in April.

And Jersey manager Mo Matthews and assistant Kevin Miller are confident that the fixtures will be accepted and used as part of Jersey’s build-up towards the Cherry Godrey Muratti in May against Guernsey at Springfield.Matthews said: ‘We have the games and we are in the process of finalising dates.

The games are against the London FA and Middlesex, they are two strong teams and hopefully we can arrange dates for sometime in April to use the games as part of our buildup toward the Muratti.’Kevin and I have spoken to the girls and their response has been good.

I’m sure the games will be of a benefit to the players and we have already spoken about fund-raising to help lower the costs for everyone.’Matthews said that that ladies are finalising a date and a venue to hold a car boot sale to raise funds.

The ladies hope to have a stall at the car boot sale themselves and possibly run a penalty competition to raise money for the team.A sponsored cycle ride is also being planned by the players to help reduced travel and accommodation expenses.A total of 33 ladies are currently training together in the Jersey squad.

They have been together since the end of October and training regularly on Sundays when there are no flybe.
