Thursday 5th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.
THERE was a massive upset in the Insurance Corporation Jersey Closed over 35s competition at the Jersey Squash Club last night when Graeme Tanguy (5/8 seed) beat the No 2 and the defending champion Hugh Jones.
Tanguy stormed into a 2-0 lead by putting Jones under pressure by stepping forward and taking the ball early – and when he had the chance he put the ball in short. However, in the third Jones came back at him by keeping the ball tight down the walls and forcing Tanguy off the T area.
Jones levelled the score by taking the third and fourth games 9-5, 9-1.
In the fifth Jones looked in control after going into a 3-0 lead, but Tanguy battled for the T area and managed to put Jones under the same pressure he had done in the first two games.
Jones began to tire quickley and Tanguy ran out a 9-3 winner.Other results – Men’s O35s quarter finals: John Wood bt John Farley 3-0; John Hibbs bt Steve Law 3-0; Trevor Griggs bt Allen Brown 3-0.Men’s O35s plate; Mike Coward bt Rob O’Neill 3-0; Ray Hockey bt Paul Williams 3-2; Mark Baudet bt Bob Biddulph 3-0; Tim Knights bt Patrick Ryan 3-1; Chris McNabb bt Nick Skiming 3-0; Mike Moyse bt John Best 3-0.
