National league home fixture for Jersey netballers

Friday 6th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.

MOORE Stephens Jersey host Leicestershire in their fifth match of the season in Division IV of the English Counties League tomorrow.

And Island coach Linda Andrews is in for a busy weekend as a B-team game has also been arranged together with matches for Jersey’s U16s and U18s on Sunday.Andrews, who will be assisted by Gill Kaye, said: ‘It’s a big weekend for netball and all the players are looking forward to the competition.

The Island team face a tough game while the juniors are being exposed to county opposition for the first time.

It’s a step up for everyone this weekend, but that’s what officials and players want so it will be interesting to see how we get on.’Jersey have slipped to fifth in their eight-team group because other Counties have used up their matches in hand.

But Jersey are just four points behind the leaders while they have a six-point advantage over Tyne and Wear with Leicestershire one-from-bottom on three points from their three games played.’All we know about Leicestershire is that they lost to Sussex and so did we.

They lost 53-38 while we were beaten 49-45.

We are stepping up a standard so we are anticipating another hard game.’The game will be similar to an inter-insular with Guernsey, it will be intense and we have to be focused for the full 60 minutes.

I put our defeat by Sussex down to us being focused for around 12 minutes each period and if we want to progress we have to increase that concentration to the full 15 minutes per quarter.’Spectators who come to watch for the first time I’m sure will be surprised by the high speed the game is played at.

We should be up for that as many of the Jersey squad played in a high speed game between St Clement and Convent A on Tuesday night.’The match, which starts at 2 pm, is indoors at Fort Regent and the Jersey team will be wearing a new light-weight kit.

The B-team game is at 3.30 pm.Sunday’s junior matches will provide a new challenge for the Jersey players as they have only played English opposition previously in seven minutes each way matches.

Sunday’s matches are four 15-minute periods.Lyndsay Barchi is in the U18 squad for the first time while newcomers to the U16s are Lauren Devine, Kelly Liddle, Zoe Hewlett, Ashley Le Feuvre, Lara Crenan and Vicky Brady.Danny Simon and Lisa Bowman will assist with the U18 and U16 teams respectively.Moore Stephens Jersey: Zoe Hotton, Jackie Norman, Shelby Wright, Carole McKeon, Jemma Bushell, Mary Blampied, Sharon West, Ellen Richings, Hayley Miller, Jane Le Feuvre and Holly Oakes.U18s: Holly Oakes, Laura Crabb, Ella Hickey, Sarah Le Couilliard, Zara Blake, Jacqui Harrop, Natalie Rondel, Allana Binnie, Steph Hales, Lyndsay Barchi, Laura A’Court and Rebecca Hughes.U16s: Natalie Workman, Sophie Holmes, Carla Plater, Abigail Hazley, Abigail Poole, Georgia Hickey, Lauren Devine, Kelly Liddle, Zoe Hewlett, Ashley Le Feuvre, Lara Crenan and Vicky Brady.
