Somerset County Cup: Tower muscled out
Monday 9th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.
FIRST Tower United’s hopes of silverware in the Somerset County Cup are over for another season.
The Jersey club were beaten 2-0 by a physically strong Hengrove Athletic just outside Bristol on Saturday afternoon.Tower coach Paul Carberry said: ‘We’ve had a great run in the competition this season and now, unfortunately, it’s all over.
Hengrove were not a better team than us but on the day they scored goals while we didn’t create a chance.’The pitch was very heavy following three days of rain and it was blowing hard diagonally across the pitch.
It was very difficult to play football on, we tried while they hit long balls to their centre forward throughout.’I always felt whoever scored first would win the game and so it proved.
Hengrove’s second goal came in the last minute when we were caught short at the back and while we didn’t play well in the first half, I thought we worked really hard in the second period. However if there had been another 90 minutes to play I still don’t think we’d have scored.’
