JERSEY’S schools are looking to cut spending by more than £1 million in an attempt to reduce Education Department expenditure.

The head teacher at every school in the Island was given two weeks to come up with a list of ways they thought they could save two per cent of their spending without having a detrimental impact on learning.

Ideas from each school were handed in to the department for review on Friday. The suggestions for cuts are being made in light of the States Fundamental Spending Review and the proposed two per cent reduction is being looked at by all divisions, including schools, in an attempt to find ways to reduce the department’s net revenue expenditure, which is estimated at £87 million for 2004.The director of Education, Sport and Culture, Tom McKeon, said: ‘At the moment we need to cut spending by up to two per cent.

We need to make efficiency savings with no reduction in service at all.’
