Hostel ‘a boost for tourism’

JERSEY could squander a golden tourism opportunity if it fails to find the cash to open the Haut de la Garenne hostel.
The Youth Hostel Association of England and Wales claim the centre could attract thousands of extra tourists every year. The association has been invited to run the centre on a joint basis by the charitable trust set up by the States but the project has run into financial trouble.Although the building is almost ready after a £2.5 million refurbishment, there is no money left to actually open it and the Tourism Development Fund recently rejected an approach from the trust for £110,000, saying they were ‘wholly unimpressed’ with the business plan.
