CAMBRIDGESHIRE’S Andy Lucas won the Modern Hotels’ Jersey Festival of Pool singles professional title for the first time last night.
At the Mayfair Hotel, in St Helier, the 35-year-old from Wisbech defeated Preston’s Andy Croasdale, the pre-tournament favourite, in the final by six frames to two.Lucas, a beaten finalist last year, pocketed £900 for his effort and he admitted that he was fortunate to have reached the final having looked a beaten man at the quarter-final stage of the competition.Lucas said: ‘I should have gone out in the last eight as I was 9-4 down against champion Derek Murphy.
But somehow I managed to get back into the game and I won six frames on the trot to win 10-9.’I then played well to beat former champion Pat O’Kane 11-2 in the semi final while last night I got a great start by winning the first four frames of the final.’Andy came back well with a couple of frames and it looked like he was going to get a third frame back but he went in-off the black.
It could have been 4-3 but it was 5-2 and I won the match with a clearance from the break in the next frame.’It’s been an excellent tournament and all the professionals and the amateurs have really enjoyed themselves.
The venue and hotel facilities are superb and we’ve all been treated well.
I know it’s a year away but I’ve decided already that I will be back to defend my title next year.’Worthington Open singles: Johnny Kemp 4, Stevie Martin 0.
