Rugby:Beches’ title hopes on Wanderers’ hands
Friday 13th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.
JERSEY Wanderers will have the ultimate say in who wins this season’s JRA Emeraude Lines league.
With all of the sides having played at least ten games each, only the Wanderers can stop Guernsey RFC’s 2nd XV from winning the league ahead of the Beeches, who have 30 points from 12 games played, nine won, and three lost.Guernsey have 29 points from their league games, with 11 games played, nine won and two lost, withone game left to play.If they win their last game they will top the league. However, recent events have meant that it isn’t as simple as that.On Thursday Les Quennevais conceded their last game in the league to Guernsey 2nds.
They weren’t prepared to travel.Similarly, St Jacques conceded their last game to the Beeches.
By doing so, Beeches were awarded three points for the win.Having played all of their games, Beeches now have 30 points and a healthy ‘points for total of 259 and a difference of plus 69.
Guernsey 2nds have 29 points from their 11 games played with 232 points to their credit and a difference of plus 54.Behind them trail both Jersey 2nds and the United Banks. All of which means that, come 29 February, if Guernsey 2nds beat the Jersey Wanderers at St Peter, they will win the league.
If they lose, Beeches will top the division. It is a confrontation that Wanderers’ captain John Creavy is looking forward to.’It was supposed to be a double header,’ he said.
‘But Guernsey today claimed the three points because we didn’t travel over.
However, on our day we can beat any of the teams in this league.
It makes no difference to us who we play.
With a full team to choose from, we fear nobody.’And Creavy is right to be optimistic, for although the Wanderers have struggled this season, they have an experienced pack and, ultimately, a three-quarter line-up which first team coach Dai Burton would love to select, albeit ten years ago rather than now. After all kinds of injury, winger Steve Byrne returns, as does centre Guy Hinks and utility player Mick Mayo.In other words, on home territory, the Wanderers should beat Guernsey 2nds – which is exactly what Beeches’ captain Peter Stockley wants to happen.’We were hoping that Les Quennevais would beat them,’ he said.
‘We were also looking forward to playing against St Jacques.
They are a sociable team, and we enjoy their company, on and off the field.’But it’s out of our hands now.’However, fingers crossed, we’re looking for a Wanderers win on 29 February.
Last year we finished bottom of the league.
I’d be genuinely happy to finish any place within the first four.’So, despite the love-hate relationship within junior rugby sides in Jersey, Wanderers’ John Creavy was adamant that he’d prefer the league to be won by Beeches, rather than to see the title go oversees to Guernsey.’It makes no difference to us where we finish in the league,’ he said.
‘But we did beat them in Guernsey a year ago.
We’ve done it once.
I can see no reason why we can’t do it again.’JERSEY RFC take on the London Irish Amateurs on Saturday, at St Peter, with one of the youngest sides ever fielded by coach Dai Burton.
