SW Counties football:Andrews limps out
Friday 13th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.
JERSEY captain Chris Andrews is out of tomorrow afternoon’s South West Counties Championship Group B game at Springfield against the RAF.
,The talented attacking midfielder, who scored Jersey’s goal in the 1-1 home draw against Sussex two weeks ago, has a knee injury.Manager Dave Matthews is already without Ross Crick, the Island’s leading goalscorer, and James Fortune from the previous game – the pair are both out of the Island – while an ear infection has also robbed Matthews of striker Jimmy Reilly.Grouville utility player Luc Le Mière, who has spear-headed his club’s promotion drive to Division I this season with 22 goals, has been added to the Jersey squad, bringing its number up to 16.Andrews said: ‘I’ve been told to rest for a week.
I’ve damaged a ligament or a tendon on the outside of a knee and it is giving me shooting pairs down my shin.’It happened last Saturday in the Le Riches Cup against Grouville but I don’t know how it happened.
I was stupid not to come off as soon as I felt it.
I had the chance to but I stayed on.’Jersey played so well against Sussex and we were so close to winning the game.
The lads are really up for tomorrow’s game and I wanted to be part of it.’If we can play as well against the RAF as we did against Sussex we can win and I’m sure it would be no more than the squad deserves because of the effort they have been putting in.’Defender Lee Bradshaw (19) will step up from his vice-captain role to skipper an Island side for the first time in the championship tomorrow.Matthews said: ‘It’s a lot of responsibility on young shoulders but Lee is big enough to carry it.
He has played in all our championship games this season and he continues to gain good experience.
He knows what is expected and I’m sure he will do a good job for us.
He listens and learns at training and in matches and I want all the players to do that.’Jersey’s starting line-up will not be announced until tomorrow.
Kick-off is at 2 pm.Squad: Jimmy Styles, Casey Hickling, Chris McNabb, James Hayward, Lee Bradshaw, Gordon Brodie, Craig Ferey, John Beatson, Dave Brodie, Chris Hamon, Ged McConnell, Gary Freeman, Dave Le Roux, Chris Carter, Charlie Smith and Luc Le Mière.
