Big wage rises for Crown Officers

SOME of the public sector’s top lawyers have received pay rises of up to 20%.

The two-year pay deal – secret until now – saw the Crown Officers, legal advisers, law draftsmen and Magistrates receive rises above the levels agreed with the rest of the public sector.The deal for 2002 and 2003 for States workers generally was 4.5% and 5.1% respectively.

But on average legal appointees have received 2% more than that each year and some received up to 10% per year.The pay award was made after a report was completed by a review board chaired by former chief adviser Colin Powell.

The board had recommended rises of up to 26% to bring the public sector more in line with private lawyers.
