Football:Grouville held as SCF break their duck in Division II

GOALS from Matt Polglase and Mark Nightingale secured Division II Sporting Club Francais their first win of the season at the weekend.

It was 13th game ‘lucky’ for SCF as they returned with the three points from St Brelade to register their first league victory since March last year.

SCF’s win lifted them to within two points of St Martin.St Lawrence also caused an upset in the division by holding leaders Grouville to a goal-less draw at Le Boulivot.

Visiting goalkeeper John Medcalf turned out to be his team’s hero by saving a penalty from Dotun Doherty.

Grouville increased their lead to three points over second-placed St Ouen with the title race wide open as the top two are still to meet again at Le Boulivot on Saturday 20 March.First Tower, who had Chris Conning sent off for alleged violent conduct, moved up one place to sixth in Division I after a 7-2 win at La Hague Manor against Sporting Academics.

Ross Goodchild scored five times for the winners and John Rutter twice.

Tony Cardoso hit both for the Accies.Rozel Rovers first team booked a home semi-final in the WJ Collins Trophy on Saturday after beating the Portuguese Club of Jersey 6-5 in a sudden-death penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 draw after extra-time at Le Couvent.Team manager Jerry O’Shea hit what turned out to be Rozel’s winning spot-kick as Portuguese hit the crossbar with their final kick.Three times Rozel pulled a goal back to equalise, Dougie Ross scoring in the 86th minute to send the match into extra time after it finished 1-1.

Both teams then scored in the first period of extra time and after Portuguese nudged ahead for the third time Rozel secured the shoot-out with a last-minute goal from Marco Vieira.José-Manuel Vieira (two) and Ricardo Varela scored for Portuguese with Gary Jarvie hitting Rozel’s second equaliser.O’Shea said: ‘Winning is a boost for our confidence, there is no doubt about that.

I could not have asked any more from the players and I think it says it all about their character and commitment to come from behind three times.’Our performances in the last two games have been much improved and on Saturday it was pleasing to see us score some goals.

We don’t concede many goals but we have struggled to score them.’Rozel now host Guernsey Rovers on Saturday 28 February, while the other semi-final is between Division II St Clement and Guernsey’s Belgraves at St Clement on Saturday 27 March.Grouville’s Reserves Division I game against Jersey Wanderers was called off because Luc Le Mière, who was not registered this month, was on duty for the Island team at Springfield.

Darren Swanson fired the hosts ahead only for the Saints to hit back through Robbie Giraffa and Jordan Ahier – the winning goal coming in the 89th minute.Jersey Scottish joined Trinity in joint-second place after two goals from James Scott and one by Jimi Caldwell helped them defeat First Tower at Les Quennevais.St Peter remain in bottom place after they were beaten 7-1 by the home team at St John.

Roly McMichael hit St Peter’s consolation against with St John scoring through Jimmy Jackson (two), Frank Blasco, Darren Parker, Tom Pygott and Dean Hughes.

St John’s other goal was an own goal while Jackson also missed a penalty.One-from-bottom St Lawrence became the first team this season to take a point off Magpies in Reserves Division II.

The teams shared six goals at St Lawrence with Chris Stephens, Tom Gibb and Sean Killian on target for the hosts and Paul Cilia (two) and Craig Armstrong scoring for the visitors.Second-placed Rozel Rovers beat Beeches Old Boys 5-2 at Les Quennevais.

Ben Doherty notched a brace and Karl Megaw, Danny Walsh and Chris Bowden singles for the Rovers.

Alan Dunn and Hamlyn Moon replied.Two goals from Richard Vieira and one each from Daniel Maciel and Fabio Abelha took Portuguese to a 4-0 win against Sporting Club at the same venue.St Ouen returned from St Martin 4-2 winners after Joe Murphy scored twice and Lionel Gomes and Jamie Bara once each.

Anton Daly and Ben Bryant (penalty) netted for St Martin.Jon Chapman and Martin Staines both scored twice to take C Division leaders Jersey Wanderers to a 4-2 win against St Brelade at Les Quennevais.

Neil Sharman and Carlton McKain hit the target for the Saints.
