Tuesday 17th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.

THE States Policy and Resources Department will be entering negotiations with Australia and New Zealand, and possibly Mexico, as part of its international remit this year.

The talks are on two fronts: to reach model agreements on the European Union tax package, particularly the savings tax directive; and the OECD obligations to exchange information on civil tax matters.

ohn Harris, P & R’s director on international matters, said talks had already taken place with the German, French, Spanish, Netherlands and Irish authorities.

owever, he stressed that no exchange would take place unless there was a ‘level playing field’, with all countries agreeing to participate, including Switzerland and the United States.
