Island Games: Games boss in drugs code talks
Friday 20th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.
THE introduction of an initiative which, if it is accepted by the members, will bring the International Island Games Association into line with sporting associations and governing bodies world-wide, was discussed in Jersey this week.
Gotland’s Bo Frykenstam, the chairman of the IIGA who has been in the Island this week, and the association’s honorary medical officer, Jersey’s Dr Carl Clinton, met for talks on drugs issues.Said Dr Clinton: ‘We talked about the World Anti Doping Agency’s (WADA) anti-doping code which has recommendations about the way to deal with the misuse of drugs in sport.’It’s a way of bringing about a uniform approach to the drug problems in sport.
Bo is very keen that the IIGA is up to date on these issues, and that we share knowledge in sports medicine, so he has asked me to take a look at the code.’Clinton will go through the pros and cons of the recommendations and prepare a paper for discussion at this year’s agm in Shetland.’I'll be looking at the subject in the context of the Island Games and any implications for us, including the problems of sports nutrition which have been in the world headlines so much in the last few weeks.
We are also hoping to organise a conference on sports medicine, for all the medics who attend the Games, during the Games themselves and in the year between Games.’
