Rugby union: Vandals’ tails are up
Friday 20th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.
WEYBRIDGE Vandals, newly-named Weybridge Vandals, were so pleased only to lose 14-0 to league leaders Guildford in their London South-West League Division III game at the weekend that they phoned the Jersey rugby club straight afterwards to tell them the news.
If that was meant to warn Jersey that they expect to win at St Peter on Saturday, JRFC coach Dai Burton isn’t convinced.’That will warm up our lads nicely,’ he said.’We gave away four silly tries to Guildford when we played them away and scored two well-worked tries of our own.
The point is that they didn’t create anything.
We’ve nothing to fear against Guildford next time.’As for the Vandals, we lost to them in the 13th minute of injury time when Arnou (Helmholt-Kneisel) had been in the sin bin for 14 minutes.’We had so much possession we should have blown them away by half-time.
But we didn’t, and we faded in the last 20 minutes.
That was early on in the season.
It won’t happen now.’All of our players are fit, and I’m looking to take control in the pack again – by the direct route – which is why I’ve chosen a bigger pack than last week.’And, with Matt Banahan and John Larose on the bench, I can change our pattern of play if I want to.
In the front row John can cause all sorts of problems.’Burton is also hoping that winger Justin Thomas will start, despite the recurrence of a knee injury.
With Richie Griffiths on holiday Andy Whelan takes his place in the centre and the back row is just about as formidable as it gets – John Allo, Ian Henderson and Steve O’Brien are big, quick, and very capable of making big holes in the opposition. So nothing short of a win is what Burton expects, although he does sound the following warning: ‘We do not have the easiest run at this end of the season, and I’m under no illusions; we will have to be at our best to beat Vandals.
If we do, we can look forward to our home game against Guildford in two weeks time.’Team: Jon Brennan, Josh Chamier, Ken Moore, Paul Woodcock, Dan McAlister, John Allo, Ian Henderson, Steve O’Brien, Dave Miles, Phil Walker, Gareth Jeffreys, Andy Whelan, Justin Thomas, Mark White.
Substitutes: John Larose, Jim Milner, Matt Banahan.
