Rugby union: Christie enjoys 56th cap despite defeat

Tuesday 24th February 2004, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY’S Alison Christie made her 56th appearance for Scotland in a 20-7 defeat by champions England in the women’s Six Nations Rugby Union Championship at Gala in Scotland last weekend.

Christie was suffering from a cold, as were a handful of her team-mates, but overall Scotland were pleased with their team performance despite the defeat.’We really enjoyed the game.

It was much closer than we all expected and in truth we were disappointed with two of the tries that were allowed to stand,’ Christie said.

‘We played much better as a team than we did when we beat Wales last week, and that was satisfying.

Had we been a bit more clinical and released the ball quicker, we could have done even better.’We certainly held our own against a side that has a lot of professional players, whereas we don’t have any.

We’re off to Zaragoza in two weeks’ time to play Spain and hopefully we can play well again and chalk up another victory.’Spain were beaten 24-0 by France last weekend and Wales beat Ireland 14-13.
