Postal service ‘is one of cheapest in Europe’
Wednesday 31st March 2004, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY Post provides one of the cheapest local postal services in Europe, says Deputy Patrick Ryan.
The president of the Postal Committee has written to States Members to stamp out allegations of inefficiency made by an anonymous group calling themselves WastedTax.WastedTax wrote to the Island’s politicians in an attempt to influence yesterday’s States debate of the Draft Postal Services Law.
The proposition, which was approved by 39 votes to two, will transfer the staff, assets and liabilities of Jersey Post to States-owned companies and open up the market to competitors.WastedTax suggested that taxpayers had been subsidising the postal service for years and that Jersey Post should pay the States back at least £15 million.
They also alleged that Guernsey’s postal system was more efficient. But Deputy Ryan says the claims are inaccurate and based on false arguments.
He said that far from subsidising Jersey Post, taxpayers had benefited from over £32 million of financial returns made by Jersey Post over a 20-year period.
