States approve draft Animal Welfare Law

THE preamble of the draft Animal Welfare Law was approved by the States yesterday by 32 votes to 12.
The law was drafted following a review of animal welfare issues and was intended to consolidate the laws promoting the welfare of animals and the prevention of unnecessary suffering by animals.
It was also constructed to allow the Economic Development Committee to require catteries, dog kennels and animal sanctuaries to get a licence to operate and involved the repeal of the four existing animal and bird laws.Debate on two amendments to the Law and the individual articles will continue on 20 April.Full report in today’s JEP, on sale at 1.15 pm.
