Onward to the final!
Thursday 1st July 2004, 12:00AM BST.
ST Helier was a town painted red and green last night as hundreds of Islanders celebrated Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Holland in the Euro 2004 semi-finals.
Madeira-born hero Ronaldo was being toasted late into the night after he put his nation’s side ahead after 26 minutes.
But Maniche put the icing on the cake when he hit the back of the net with what could become the goal of the tournament.
Portuguese fans are now focusing on Sunday’s final, when their team will play either the Czech Republic or Greece.
The police this morning praised the good-natured crowd of around 700 who converged on the Minden Place area after last night’s game for the customary flag-waving and beeping of car horns.
Insp Chris Beechey said: ‘The large crowd was full of a lot of very good-natured people.
There were no arrests and no reported problems.’
