Middle Easterners reveal a taste for Jersey oysters
Saturday 3rd July 2004, 12:00AM BST.
THE Jersey Oyster Company has now started to export Jersey oysters to Beirut – a sign of ‘very encouraging interest in our product’, according to company partner Steve Luce.
The oysters are shipped to France weekly and are flown on to the Lebanon.
Mr Luce said there had been a lot of Lebanese who had moved to France during Beirut’s troubles several years ago and that many of these these had now returned to their own country with a taste for European shellfish and other western food.
Among other new customers is the wholesale arm of the Le Carrefour chain of supermarkets and a restaurant in Strasbourg which now refuses any source for their oysters other than Jersey.
