Two run for Jurat

Saturday 3rd July 2004, 12:00AM BST.

FORMER police superintendent Sam Le Breton is standing again for the vacant post of Jurat.

He stood in the last election when Peter Morgan was elected Jurat.

It means that there are two candidates going for the job – former States Greffier Mary Newcombe (66) has already announced her intention.

Mr Le Breton is being proposed by Advocate David Le Cornu.

Born in the Island, and educated at Hautlieu, Mr Le Breton was in the States police for over 35 years, reaching the rank of superintendent, which he held until his retirement in December 1997.

After leaving the force, Mr Le Breton, who is married with two sons, became a director of Jersey Mutual and took up a part-time position as a Greffier Substitute.

Miss Newcombe, who is being proposed by Finance and Economics Committee president Senator Terry Le Sueur, was born in London.

Her 34-year career of close involvement in the administration of the Island’s government ended in 2002.

The post has been made vacant by the retirement of Jurat Mike Rumfitt.

The election is taking place in the Royal Court on Thursday 8 July.
